Do you accept every LinkedIn request that comes your way, even if you don’t know the sender? As a consultant, I used to see accepting these requests as a part of doing business but this latest article from CIO.com is making me rethink that approach.  The article summarizes research from Dell SecureWorks Counter Threat Unit which identified a network of fake LinkedIn profiles that were being actively used in a targeted social engineering campaign.  We’ve been so conditioned to see LinkedIn as a tool to facilitate business connections which could land us our next big project or job opportunity, that it has become easy for attackers to gain access to our profiles and mine it for information that could be used to breach the network.  The article outlines the research and how the accounts were being used in much more detail, but it has convinced me to be more selective in my social media work.
