One of the most important skills that an IT leader can have is the ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical business resources.  This perspective is supported by ComputerWeekly.com in their article CEOs want CIOs to stop using jargon and focus on business needs.  The article summarizes the results of a workshop conducted by Eduserv with a small sample of CEOs from the public sector.  I encourage you to read the whole thing, but here are the best take-aways:

  • You can’t ‘enable digital services’ or ‘deliver transformation’ without specific, real-world examples of business issues solved by technology and relevant, measurable outcomes.
  • Executives want IT to “stop talking about IT and focus on solving business issues”
  • Executives are genuinely interested in solving the legacy IT problem.
